WU: Subversion

Watch the video provided here, and in a blog post, comment on how the video demonstrates subversion/subversiveness. After you make your own post, for homework, comment on ONE of your peers, entering into a conversation with her. By doing this, you will EXTEND what your classmate has said in her post.

In other words, it's not enough so simply say you agree or disagree or that what the other student has said is "good". Instead, while you may certainly pay compliments or disagree, you must ADD information to what they are saying, EXTENDING, COMPLICATING, OR REFUTING what another student has said.

HINT: Think about what you learned in the very first unit about culture -- more specifically high/dominant culture versus low culture. Also, read the information in the video and listen to the explanation of the dancer's background. Where does the dance form he mentions originate? What other dance forms does he seem to combine with it? Pay attention to the space he is using and what he is doing in that space. All of these considerations should assist you in considering how this video demonstrates subversion and subversiveness. Be sure to use the form of the word correctly.

Forms of the word:

subvert - verb
subversion - noun
subversive - adjective/adverb
subversiveness - noun

Here is the video:

  1. The subversion that is expressed in the video is the two types of dance that the man does. Typically, ballet is thought of as very prestigious and high up on the social hierarchy of dancing. Hip-Hop on the other hand is considered lower on the social hierarchy and seen as a lower class of dance. The man’s dancing is an example of subversion because he combines both types of dance into his own type of performing. Also, by using hip hop dance moves in a high class art gallery, he subverts the two aspects of higher and lower cultures into one type of cultural and distinguished art.

    1. To expand on your point about the art gallery, he was in an art gallery that displayed paintings and drawings. He subverts the normal use for the art gallery by performing ballet/hiphop in it, which is another art form.

  2. This video exemplifies subversion of traditional hip hop dancing. Hip hop is generally seen as a lower class, or less classy type of dance, while ballet is the highest class of dance and arguable the most dominant culture in dance society. The dancer explains how he first learned to dance ballet, teaching hip hop in exchange for instruction in ballet. The two dance cultures are both incorporated into his dance. The music he uses, and the gracefulness of his steps draw from the dominant ballet culture. The space he chose to perform is a museum which is generally seen as a place of high class. Dancing hip hop in this condition subverts the idea of a less classy or more traditional depiction of hip hop.

    1. You could strengthen your argument by descibing what elements of hip hop and ballet are subversive. For example, you could explain each dance form and how they differ. You could elaborate on the music, moves, and background for each as well as explain how they are attachteched to the social hierarchy.

    2. I agree with your point on the setting of the art gallery and it’s role in the subversion of high and low class. Furthermore the setting in the art museum versus the outdoors also contributes to their subversion. Art museums are seen as very professional places, while dancing on the sidewalk is seen as very relaxed and not as professional. Subversion is expressed while he dances ballet outside in a location that is considered the opposite of an art museum.

  3. The video demonstrates subversion. Subversion is when the usual rules or principles of something are reversed or counteracted in some way. A few seconds into the video, I got the feeling that it was about subversion just from the man's motions. He would do one move and then reverse it or subvert it and would continue doing that with different parts of his body. He mentions that he does ballet, which is usually looked at as a more feminine form of dance. He goes against the norm and the stereotype by doing in this dance style. On top of that, the man has his own way of doing ballet. Ballet is a very strict dance form, there is a right and wrong and very little room for self expression. The man contradicts/subverts the rules of ballet, and combines ballet with hip hop, a very different form of dance with less rules and more room for self expression.

    1. To further develop your point, you could include that another example of subversion is that ballet is considered to be more elegant and higher class than hip-hop, which is typically associated with lower-class and urban culture. This would show that Lil Buck is subverting societies norms and standards.

    2. To expand on your arguement, you can talk about the environment he's dancing in and about the two styles, ballet and hip hop, that he combines. Since he's combining hip hop and ballet and dancing it in an art museum, a place that's usually considered high class, he's the roles and positions of the dance styles and the environment he's in.

  4. In the video, subversion appears in the dancer’s race and they type of dance he does. More often, woman are the ones in ballet but in this case, the dancer is male and learning ballet. Another subversion happens with the dancer’s race. Since it was created, white people are seen dancing ballet and since the dancer in the video is black, he creates a subversion. Finally, the music also had a subversion since it is expected to be a ballet song but the dancer choreographed it with hip hop moves with a bit of ballet influence.

    1. Subversion can also be found in the setting in which Lil Buck dances. Lil Buck is dancing in a museum. In a typical art museum one can't find the art form of dance. In a typical museum one would find paintings drawing and sculptures, not dance. Also, in a typical museum one’s attention would be on the paintings on the wall, or on the sculptures in the room. In the video the first thing a person in the room would look at is Lil Buck while he dances. Lastly, museums are usually filled with art that is considered high-class. In this setting Lil Buck would be considered the main artistic attraction, even though he is dancing a type of hip hop dance.

    2. Subversion is also demonstrated by his styles of dance and where he is dancing. He has mixed opposing styles, hip hop and ballet, into one. Also, he is dancing in an art museum and most people don't move around a lot in museums.

  5. The video of the dancer in the art gallery demonstrates subversion because the roles of the person and the art on the walls are switched. Usually, when one goes to an art museum, they would observe the art and the pieces on the walls would the main focus. However, in the video, the dancer in the museum becomes the art and the focus is on him. As the dancer dances through the gallery, it seems as though the paintings become the background and become less significant. It is also subversion because the dancer performs street dancing combined with some elements in ballet. Since ballet and art museums are typically more associated with the upper class compared to street dance, it is surprising and different to see street dance as the main subject rather than the art museum. Therefore, the person performing street dance subverts and dominates the art museum.

    1. Furthering what you were saying about the background of the museum, I think if you added on to that you would strengthen your arguement. Also if you brought up the color choices of the background and the clothes of the dancer. You can also say how because the most dominant colors are black and white, you can explain how they are subverting each other. :)

    2. One example of a counterargument to your claim that the dancer subverts the setting is that the music—an influential part of the setting—subverts the man's dance. During the video, music that is typically played in ballet is played as the man dances. Even though he is dancing hip-hop, the ballet mood set by the music makes his movements seem more similar to ballet than to street dancing. Because the music undermines the dancer's performance, it is demonstrating subversion. Overall, it is the music of the setting that is subverting the dance: not the other way around.

  6. In the video subversion is illustrated through dance. The two kinds of dances that the Lil Buck dances are hip hop and ballet. Hip hop and ballet are two very different kinds of dances, but somehow he is able to make them seem very natural together. Ballet is considered a very elegant, respected and high-class type of dance. Hip hop, on the other hand, is considered much more a part of urban culture, and is considered lower class. These two kinds of dance are very subversive. The Lil Buck is dancing in an art museum, this might be subversive because although dance is a form of art, it would not be found in a typical museum with paintings or sculptures.

    1. Adding on to your idea about the museum, you could further the topic by explaining the colors used in the museum and the dancer's clothes. For example, the background is all white and the man is dressed in black causing him to become the center of attention, also the dancer's shoes are white, which by being next to the black clothes caused them to stand out even more. :)

  7. In the video shown in class, the dancer subverts the roles of hip hop and ballet. Typically, in society, ballet is seen as a high culture and is also seen as more disciplined. On the other hand, hip hop is on the lower spectrum. By combining the two, the dancer undermines the function of both styles of dance in society. The location of the museum intensified the untamed hip hop dance style, but also compliments the more gentle ballet dance form. The location amplifies the subversion dancer creates.

    1. I suggest elaborating on what ways he subverts ballet and hip hop in his actual dance, what moves are incorporated from each dance culture. You can also mention how he first learned ballet in the same presence as hiphop. Another suggestion is to expain the context of a museum and what social calss it is usually associated with.

  8. The video demonstrates subversion in the dancers style and background. His style combines ballet and hip hop which are not usually connected. The ballet expresses the more gentle and delicate side, while the hip hop represents a more upbeat and modern expression. The ballet undermines it because the music is classical, instead of a more commonly used upbeat song. These two styles of dance are subverted, but gracefully intertwined by the artist. Ballet is usually thought of as a more feminine style, and by the dancer being male it is another example of subversion. He is breaking the common stereotype of ballet being for females and creating a beautiful piece of art.

    2. You could further support your point that his style combines ballet and hip hop, which aren't usually seen together in a dance, by adding in a cultural aspect as well. Hip hop is usually seen in lower culture and ballet is seen as high culture. However, the dancer combines both styles of dance, subverting the high or dominant culture of ballet.

  9. In the video, the guy demonstrates the act of subversion. Throughout his childhood, he danced— the dominant style of dance in his area—hip pop. In his teen years, he taught hip pop moves to a ballet instructor and the instructor taught him ballet moves. His dance consists of hip pop moves and ballet moves together. In the video, he subverts by changing the meaning of hip pop and ballet and combining two styles we accept as different.

    1. You could add/elaborate on other things that are sub versed in the video such as how the fact that he is expressing a hip hop like dance in a prestigious and fancy museum containing (presumably) famous pieces of art. You could provide some more evidence to support the subversion

  10. This film depicts the subversion, or the switching of roles of two dance styles, hip hop and ballet. This transpires as the speaker, or the protagonist of the video describes how he and his neighborhood dancers traded off their hip hop style of dance with ballet. In other words, the professional ballet dancers who came to the protagonist’s town taught him, a hip hop dancer how to perform ballet. In reciprocation, the primary hip hop dancers teach the ballet dancers their own personal style of dance, ballet. Furthermore, the actual location of the performance depicts the unexpected subversion that occurs. In general, in a museum setting, one typically imagines more stereotypical classical images, such as classical music, or even ballet. Yet the protagonist actually merges his initial style of hip hop with his learned style of ballet, consequently performing the unanticipated and subverted mixture of the two.

    1. You could further elaborate on how hip hop is being subverted because it is moving from the lower to upper class. The ballerinas taught him ballet, but he also taught them hip hop. The video depicts a typically lower class culture as part of the upper class, because the man is dancing in a sophisticated art museum, to classical music, and has expanded his technique to a higher culture.

    2. They way you mentioned how the subversion was in the dance styles was really good. One thing that would be a small change is, you forgot a comma in the second sentence. A small detail you could have added was about his movement and the contrast of it with the stereotypical dancing he was talking about.

  11. In this video, subversion is displayed. For example, the man is a hip-hop dancer, and he was dancing in a art gallery. Art galleries are typically very formal, prestigious settings, and this man subverts the art gallery by performing a hip-hop dance, which is not typically associated with areas or people that are fancy and formal. The man also subverts hip-hop by mixing it with ballet. This is subversion because ballet and hip-hop have very contrasting associations. Ballet is normally associated with higher class, and hip-hop is considered “street dance”, meaning that it is normally affiliated with people of lower class or prestige. this video, subversion is displayed. The dancers subvert by teaching each other dance styles that they are not commonly affiliated with.

    1. Try avoiding repetition to make your argument clear and concise. In the beginning of the paragraph, it says," The man also subverts hip-pop by mixing it with ballet". This sentence is similar to another sentence towards the end of the paragraph, "This man also subverts hip-pop and ballet by combining them together". :)

  12. The video demonstrates subversion of the arts. The dancer is black in the traditionally white sophisticated culture of art museums, with even dominantly white walls. Black male ballet dancers also aren’t predominantly seen dancing for the prestigious ballet companies. Many black people aren’t represented in the arts, as black artists aren’t usually seen dominating these art institutions. His dance style started with Memphis rap music, which is usually seen as low culture. His dance seemed to incorporate both ballet and robotic motions, like a street style. He undermines the usual meaning of ballet, which is dominated by white high culture, by mixing in the low culture of street dance style.

  13. In the film, two different types of dance are engine subverted. One style is ballet which is typically associated with higher class and intensity, whereas hip-hop is seen as organized chaos and associated with the lower class. Through this video, the two opposite ideas are merged together. Hip-hop and ballet are subverted together beautifully and made into a whole new category of dance. Another example of subversion in the video is the color scheme. The two most predominant colors in the film are white and black. Because they are such drastic opposites and are blended together, they are being subverted. The director may have chosen such drastic opposites to make one stand out over the other. In this case, the background and floor was white, but the man was clothed in black causing the viewers focus to shift to the dancer.

  14. The video demonstrates subversion through where the man is dancing and the styles he has learned. Ballet is often associated with wealthy and upper class people because it is a very sophisticated and classical from of art. The man says he first started dancing hip hop with an underground rap influence in in Memphis, Tennessee. This suggests that the crowd he was associated with would have been of a lower class and overall much different from ballet. The styles of ballet and hip hop are subverted because the man is practicing ballet, even though he came from a background associated with the lower class. He is also still using his hip influence to teach the ballet teachers hip hop and possibly bring it up from the lower class. Instead of practicing this hip hop style just in the lower class areas he came from, he is performing it in a very luxurious art museum to classical music that is usually associated with ballet. The roles of the the two types of dance are subverted.

  15. The dancer in the video was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He combines hip hop and ballet which is the first subversion because these two dance forms are very different. Ballet is very fancy and delicate while hip hop is more upbeat and fast paced. They also have their own styles of music, but in this video he combines both styles by having hip-hop choreography with ballet music in the background. Another example of subversion I noticed was the color choice. The two main colors used in this video, black and white, were chosen because they are opposites of each other. This contradiction made each color stand out. Lastly, museums are typically seen as a higher class place while the hip-hop dance style is seen as a lower class idea. By putting these two classes together, it creates subversion.

    1. I would actually slightly disagree with your argument which states that the dancer’s combination of two contrasting dance styles depicts subversion in this short film. Indeed, ballet and hip hop are two unquestionably contrasting forms of dance, ones that are not typically regarded simultaneously. Even so, the mere of action of combining these two differing styles, I believe, is not subversion. Conversely, subversion is the act of transposing the standard roles of two objects, in ways not generally considered. As such, simply combining these two does not really switch the two dance styles; it merely interweaves them, generating a new form of dance, never previously perceived. I do, however, support your claim in that the location of the performance, the museum, and the actual performance itself are two subverting subjects of this film.

  16. The video is an example of subversion because it combines two very different dance forms; ballet and hip hop. Ballet is very graceful and was originally danced to classical music and performed by European elites. Hip hop is more aggressive. Is was originally danced to hip hop or rap music and started by black people in poor neighborhoods. Because ballet was started by Europeans and hip hop was started by black people, hip hop was looked down upon on the dance hierarchy because of the music it's danced to and the people that originated it. The dancer in the video combines the two different forms which allows the differences to exist. Another example of subversion is how the dancer wears black, is black, and dances in a primarily white space. The color contrast helps portray the dance style because just like the dance forms, the colors are very different, yet, they still exist in the same area to create beautiful art

    1. I think you should elaborate more on how the dancer's race and black clothing and the white environment is subversion. Also, maybe you should talk more about the environment he's dancing in. Besides that, I think your argument is strong and I like how talked about the background for ballet and hip hop because it made your point easy to understand and follow.

  17. The video demonstrates subversion through the setting, the dancer's background, and the music of the video. While the man dances through the art museum, he is surrounded by paintings in large, empty rooms. The peculiar setting portrays subversion because of how huge the museum is in comparison to the dancer, making the man seem small and less important because he takes up less space. The dancer's background also reflects subversion because the dancer takes ballet—a part of a dominant culture—and combines it with street dancing, part of a non-dominant culture. When he enters the museum, ballet music begins playing as he performs a street-style dance. The music subverts the man's dance because it sets a ballet mood, even though he is performing hip-hop movements. Ultimately, the video addresses subversion by creating dominance and non-dominance in the dancer's life, the background music, and the dance's setting.

    1. Subversion is also demonstrated in his style of dance, because he mixes hip hop and ballet which are opposite styles. Also, subversion is illustrated by the fact that he is dancing in an art museum. Most people look at art and don't move around, but he is dancing. Other than that, I like your paragraph.

  18. This video demonstrates subversion. Subversion is demonstrated by what the man does, where he is doing it, and the music. The man is dancing a dominantly hip hop style mixed with other styles. His style isn’t exactly hip hop, but has another style, ballet, mixed in. The fact that his dancing is both hip hop and ballet subverts. Hip hop is a very loose and wild style, whereas ballet is usually a disciplined style. Also, he is dancing in an art museum. An art museum is typically a tame place where people walk around and look at art, but he is dancing around the building. Finally, the music is slow and not the type of music most people would dance hip hop to. The music seems more fit for ballet dancing, yet he is dancing hip hop, almost the opposite of ballet, to it.

  19. The main theme of the video is subversion. The title shows this, it is called "Lil Buck" which are used in two very different contexts. Lil, which is usually used as a shortened version of little is used for small things and which is usually matched with something delicate or calm. Buck is used in a way of strength and usually correlates with large subjects. In the video, the man was talking is black, which shows subversiveness, stereotypically, with many other concepts in the video. In the beginning, the man mentions dancing and how he started out with ballet, which is normal categorized with small white women who are fragile or delicate. Another subversion showed within the video is the background of it. The video's background is mostly white and clean, contrasting with the man's outfit, which is a black shirt and pants, making the illusion of not belonging there. Throughout the video, in the background, there are many sophisticated paintings in the totally white building. Stereotypically, people who go to a museum, which is a background usually paired with people who are white and rich.
